The Importance Of Learning To Swim
The QCDA states that by Key Stage 2 children should swim unaided for a sustained period of time over a distance of at least 25 meters. Learning to swim can be very daunting for a young person, which is why it is important that we give children all the help and support to feel confident in the water.
There are so many benefits from learning to swim. Swimming is an excellent form of exercise for people of all ages. Exercise experts say that swimming one mile is the equivalent of running four. Overall, swimming can be used for exercise, fun, and even lifesaving. Water safety is incredibly important children and adults must learn to respect water and understand what to do to keep a float. The movements that are done during swimming will be very useful for their body. They will feel the freedom of moving and develop breathing techniques under the water. The following are tips on how to make learning to swim an enjoyable experience: · Don't hurry children learning to swim, encourage but don't pressure them. · Get into the water slowly. Don't start out in the deep end. · Show them the basics of swimming; encourage the child to kick their legs and paddle with their arms. · Show them how to float. Floating is a great way to learn to feel comfortable in water and is also a useful safety technique. · When they are ready, you should actively encourage them to start swimming on their own. Learning to swim is one of the big milestones for children, parents and their teachers. Each child is different and will learn to swim in their own time. Always supervise children in the water even if they are confident you don’t know when they may get into danger. Trusting water and learning to swim is a gradual process and doesn't happen all at once. You will always need to be aware of all your children’s needs. Most of all make sure children have fun in the water and build their confidence. Introduce engaging games that will help them develop their skills in the water.
